Nauti Thoughts: Safely Sunkissed

Safely Sunkissed

Everyone loves a beach day. The sun is shining, the ocean breeze is blowing, the waves are crashing. You're relaxed, you're happy, you're getting your tan on...

Oh, wait did you hear that?? That’s your mom reminding you to put on some sunscreen.

Will you listen? Probably depends on the type of sunscreen! Anything over 30 SPF is like a blanket that blocks you from the sun rays and anything you have to rub into your body like lotion —um hello sand getting caught in the cream and sticking to your body, no thank you.

So often I hear people saying “I’d rather be burned than pale,” or “ooooh I’m trying to roast today,” and “a burn is a solid tanning base.”

And hey I’m so guilty of this too!! The number of times I've stared into the mirror while tearing up from rubbing Aloe Vera on my lobster, red body after a day of tanning has been more times than I would like to share.

Being outdoors is FUN, being tan is SO FUN, but protecting your skin should also be FUN!

While the sun is beautiful and warm, it can have some nasty effects on our body.  It causes sunburns, premature aging, skin damage, and makes you more susceptible to skin cancer. Over 90% of skin cancer is caused by sun exposure. Now, this doesn't mean that you need to hide from the sun and layer up on clothing to protect yourself because the sun also has so many benefits for us. Sunlight puts you in a good mood (combating depression by increasing your dopamine release), is known to kill bad bacteria, and increases vitamin D levels which is vital for healthy bones.

So how do we yield the benefits of the sun while also protecting our skin?
SUNSCREEN!

Sunscreen is so good for your skin. It will protect you from the harmful effects of sunlight while allowing you to gain the positive ones. It shields you from UV rays, allows you to tan without getting burned, and it enhances the health of your skin by protecting the essential skin proteins such as collagen, keratin, and elastin.

Sunscreen doesn’t have to be something you only use when you’re tanning, using face moisturizers with SPF is a good idea to protect yourself in everyday life. This will prevent any acne scarring, delay face wrinkles, and help defend your skin from any other sun damage.

A lot of beauty products everywhere contain SPF, which is great but these products also can be full of harsh chemicals (chemicals with effects as negative as the effects from the sun). This is why it is so important to KNOW THE PRODUCTS YOU ARE USING. Recently, I started using Coola Suncare and it has been amazing! Totally nauti approved.

Coola Suncare is an antioxidant-rich plant-based sunscreen which includes ingredients such as Algae and Red Raspberry Seed Oil, excluding harmful materials such as parabens, GMOs, and oxybenzone. Not only is it 100% organic, but it is so cute and has so many diverse products for every need. They have sunscreen, beauty, and sunless tan collections, varying in products from spray-on sunscreen, face moisturizers, lip balm, and makeup.

My favorite products are the Mineral Face SPF 30 Cucumber Moistruizer and the Eco-Lux Body SPF 30 Orangic Sunscreen Spray. It smells good, it feels good, and it looks good. (Seriously this blue color— ok such a vibe).
