NAUTI WARRIOR: Danielle

This month's Nauti Warrior is a person who embodies the true spirit of a warrior, striving to be happy and healthy in all aspects of her life.

Let's get to know D A N I E L L E

1. One of the reasons you are such a Warrior is because of your unique experiences with staying fit/living a healthy lifestyle. When you talked about being active you did not mention working out to lose weight or build muscle, it stemmed from natural enjoyment. Can you talk about some things you do that's active?

One thing that I love to do is go on walks. Growing up, my family really valued spending quality time together. After almost every meal, my family would go on walks. I have found that going on walks is not only good for your physical health, but for your mental health as well. Lately, I have found some neighborhoods around Point Loma that are great places to go on walks just to clear your mind. I think that the best thing you can do to fit in a little more exercise, is socialize while you do it. I love catching up with my grandparents or family members while I walk. There is something about just breathing in the air outside that really makes you appreciate life, especially in San Diego.

 2. Every time I see you, you’re always smiling! How do you stay positive?

I simply love people and seeing other people smile. I think I am pretty good about not comparing myself to others, so I always feel really content in life. I have a memory from when I was really young and I was in the grocery store with my dad. We had passed an elderly woman probably in her 80s and I smiled at her. She came right up to us and told my dad that she hadn’t had someone smile like that at her in years. My dad was so proud of me that he bought me a Hershey’s bar (that’s probably why I remember the story) and from then on I try to acknowledge people as they walk by. I want to be known as a happy person because honestly, I am. I tell my best friend all the time how much I love my life.

3. How do you feel after you’ve done something active?

I feel accomplished and proud of myself. There’s a certain satisfaction in having an active goal and reaching it. I love the feeling of being exhausted but totally pumped on life after finishing a workout or doing anything active. Being active makes you excited to be active again.

4. What’s your favorite thing about yourself?

I always refer to myself as a people pleaser. I think it’s an amazing trait to be very vocal about your opinions and thoughts, but an even greater trait to listen to others. I love hearing other people’s opinions so that I can expand my knowledge and really try to understand different points of view. I think a lot of people can open up to me and trust me because I honestly try to make each person I talk to feel heard. I like that I can get along with any kind of person because I don’t judge them based on their beliefs.

5. Is there anything else you do besides being active that is good for you? Skin-care? Diet? Etc.

I think people who know me well know that I love cooking my own healthy food. Something I was taught from my mom was the importance of preparing our own food. I believe my mom had read a book once that explained that humans are the only species that can prepare their own food. With that being said, why would we choose not to do so? I love finding recipes to try or even creating my own. I think it’s really important to know everything you’re putting in your body and how much it affects your daily life.

6. What’s a motto/quote that you follow in your life?

“Never peak.” My mom told me this when I was in high school about to come to college. She told me that a lot of people get caught up in moments and try to do things because they think that they are in their prime. She told me everything I do is to help prepare me for the future. I don’t picture a certain moment of time as being when I “peaked” because I hope that I will always be excited about what is to come.

7. What’s something you’ve discovered about yourself this year?

I can do more than what I thought I was capable of. I have held leadership positions this year that I would have never expected myself to hold. At one point I was given so much praise for what I had accomplished. It seemed strange to me at first because I hadn’t reflected on all the work I had done. But now, looking back, I have realized that I have more potential than I realized and I am excited to expand my goals for my future career in the hopes to better myself and the people around me.

8. What is something you are looking forward to?

I’m looking forward to tomorrow and the day after that. I have always been a person that worries about things that won’t even happen for years. With all the tragedy happening right now in California with the shooting and fires, I am trying to focus on all that I am grateful right now. A lot of my family friends lost their homes and all their belongings. What I am looking forward to are just the everyday things that I usually don’t pay attention to, but would miss if they were gone.
