What are you grateful for?
Happy wellness Wednesday everyone and happy November!
Since Thanksgiving is right around the corner, I wanted to briefly touch on the importance of actively recognizing what it is you are thankful for. Over quarantine, I found myself in a very negative head space. I was angry and upset with everything that was going on and was just trying to get through each day. I become so tired of being in this headspace, because generally I am someone who tries to focus on the positives even when things aren't going my way.
One morning I looked at my school planner, that I was no longer using because well there was nothing to plan, and I turned it into a gratitude journal. I see a ton of influencers on social media talk about journaling, so I decided to give it a go. At first it was hard to remember every morning, but after a week or two it become apart of my morning routine. It has been over half a year now, and I still take 5 minutes out of my morning to reflect on what I am grateful and set my intentions for the day.
I can genuinely say that this has been the healthiest habit I have formed for myself. It has allowed me to maintain a positive outlook throughout the day, and let's be honest limit the amount of time I spend complaining about problems that really just aren't problems at all. I have learned to appreciate the little things in life, and also figure out what exactly my core values are.
Last year I was on crutches and basically on bed rest for a semester, and this year with Covid-19, I wake up every morning and am so thankful for my health and my able body. It may sound silly, but it is most definitely a privilege that we should not be taking for granted. We often forget about the privileges we have, but actively writing out what you are grateful for reminds us of what they may be.
Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday, and with this new habit I have formed, I feel an even deeper tie with this day. So, I challenge you all to try journaling for the month of November. Wake up in the morning and write down what you are grateful for; it's okay if you skip a day or two, not every day is going to be perfect.
I promise that if you keep up with it and form the habit, you will notice a shift in your behavior and outlook on life. I am so glad I gave journaling a go because in a time that is so uncertain, and surrounded by so much negativity, I feel as though I am able to focus on positivity and devote my energy towards those things.
If you give it a go, let me know :) I would love to hear how it goes for you!
